Creativity Defined

It is difficult to define creativity because it is generally a subjective concept.  I have always considered creativity to be a form of expression.  In other words, being creative involves expressing ideas, imagination, and emotions through something original.  However, it is hard to say what qualifies as "original", because, for the most part, everything "original" has been done or thought of before.  What really matters is whether or not creators are aware of the originality of their ideas.  For example, young children are young an unexposed to many ideas and thus, much is new and original in their eyes.  For this reason, much simplicity is present in kindergarten artwork.  If a grown adult made such simple artwork, it is unlikely that it would be viewed as creative.  Nevertheless, many view young children as highly creative individuals.  This relates to the fact that the young children are stepping outside of their boundaries and thinking of ideas that are new to them, which is essential to creativity.

  1. What you said makes a really good point. There are different levels of creativity for everyone in life. Children are viewed as creative because they are young and inexperienced and they are not scared to express themselves.

  2. I agree with your post because I strongly believe that in order to be creative you don't have to create something new to the world, it can sometimes just be new to you. if you are thinking outside the box and looking beyond what is normal to you, you are still in my opinion being creative even if doesn't have a big affect on the rest of the world

  3. I agree totally. Kids, in my eyes, are considered to be more creative than grown-ups are. Maybe it's the idea that kids often come up with new and novel ideas to themselves, making them seem more creative than adults. Creativity is hard to define, however, I feel you set a good foundation for the further readings in our class.
